Historian A. J. P. Taylor reviewing  THE ANARCHISTS by James Joll.
“Mr. Joll might also have spared a few pages for the later English Anarchists. Guy Aldred, the last and best of them died in obscurity only the other day. He deserves a statue in Glasgow, his latter-day home.”
THE OBSERVER WEEKEND REVIEW, Oct. 25, 1964

Freedom without socialist society is only freedom to starve; struggling alone to battle the elements contrived by capitalist marketeering. All of us must contribute to the welfare of all in order to overcome a hand-to-mouth existence. But in capitalist society the individual is left to rot as the ‘market’ decides. That fact alone makes socialist society necessary, and I believe it will put an end to most criminal activity (most of which festers among those who are left to rot, notwithstanding all that is said to the contrary). But socialist society cannot occur unless enough of us want it to. To quote W. E. Channing: “A people which wants a saviour, which does not possess an earnest and pledge of freedom in its own heart, is not yet ready to be free.” Preface by R. P. Finch

“We live in times of capitalism; that is, in times of self-interest.We are moved by a sense of fear, and a willingness to compromise. All men tend to compromise, because all men fear the logic of their own thoughts. That fact is never realized. We are afraid to 'come down to Earth'. This fear we hide from ourselves, and certainly from others, under cover of bombast and criticism of friends, and this separates us from those who should be at our sides. This is lamentable, but it is characteristic of our species.” -- Guy A. Aldred.

“In the beginning Man was the product of brute Reality. He possessed no soul and that does not mean some supernatural manifestation of something which descended into Man. It is an expression of Man reaching upwards. It means that the animal has developed a new understanding and has therefore changed into a new being. But it is a growth from the roots; it is a plant standing upright, stretching upwards; it is a challenge to dull reality. It becomes part of a new Reality. It represents a mighty growth, a great power fostering a new world.” -- Guy A. Aldred

“Aldred believed in the individual, but not in ‘Individualism.’ To him the individual was not merely the person, a complex of personal needs. The individual was the person, the results of his actions, his part in the intricate intertwining of social relationships. For just as there is an elusive Now in the flow of time, so there is an indeterminate One in the ramifications of human relationships. The One is false to himself if the Many are not implied in his being, and the Many will cease to exist if it destroys the One.”  J. T. Caldwell.

A book about Jesus next to none!
A Jesus that belonged to human history but who was used by the corrupt powers of history to further their own ends. A book about the message of Jesus
unfettered by church rituals.
A book that should be read by
everyone who thinks that they
too have something to say about
the world and its religious and
political development.

WHY JESUS WEPT is an attempt to bring out the message
of the man Jesus that has been overlooked owing to its stark contrast to all political and manipulating powers that have so far given history its colour and traditions. When we read WHY JESUS WEPT we are immediately tempted to continue with    THE REBEL AND HIS DISCIPLES  and other writings of  Guy A. Aldred.

These Essays by Guy A. Aldred take us back to a time when there were social messages that inspired people and gave them hope: that encouraged new strengths for new challenges: that restored personal dignity with purpose and lively intent.
